 Madonna of Rast The Madonna of Rast holds her child on her lap in a maternal gesture of compassion. Symbols are inscribed on her sides and front. On her back is a clear band with symbols making up what Marija Gimbutas and others believe is the earliest human writing or script. The Old European symbolic signs of the angle alphabet were developed as sacred hieroglyphics in reverence to the Goddess by the Mesolithic cultures of southeastern Europe.  Fish Goddess of Lepenski Vir The Fish Goddess of Lepenski Vir was placed at the head of an altar. She combines fish, woman and a bird of prey, all symbols of the Goddess of birth, death and regeneration. The large stone sculptures were found in triangular trapezoid shrines in the Iron Gate region of the Danube river. A large mountain across the Danube from the site has a similar trapezoidal shape.
